Concerns, Announcements and Devotional Thought

A Weekly Ministry of Indianapolis First Friends Meeting

As Way Opens by Beth Henricks

Eight months ago I called a Friend of Friends Committee of National Legislation (FCNL) to ask if he would be willing to contribute to our capital campaign.  This is a Friend I have admired and respected for a number of years.  He has been significantly involved in abolishing the death penalty in his home state and he is a committed Quaker and strives for peace and social justice.  We had a lengthy conversation as I knew he had cared for his wife of 35 years through a painful and difficult death 2 years ago.  As we were sharing about our lives, he told me that he was gay.  This was a real surprise to me and he went on to share that he had found a companion that he cared deeply about.  We did not discuss all that led up to this, but he did share that he had been afraid to speak his truth and was still concerned about going public with this information.  I saw him at WYM annual session two weeks ago with his companion and he told me that he was ready to be public.  The issue of same sex marriage is on the news, in our court systems and being talked about within many churches and denominations.  It is a divisive issue but one that has had significant change in opinion by many.  I believe that the fear we experience when we see a lifestyle different from ours, is overcome with love and acceptance when we see that this is our brother, sister, father, mother and child.  It was beautiful to observe a sincere handshake and hug between my Friend who has gone public and another person who has publicly voiced concern biblically about sexual orientation.  Hearts change attitudes one person at a time.

Western Yearly Meeting (WYM) and Friends United Meeting (FUM) 2014 Projects

First Friends, Indianapolis is just one of many Friends’ Meetings that comprise WYM and FUM.  WYM and FUM exist to bring Quakers together to do work that individual meetings are not able to do alone.  Each year WYM and FUM each sponsors a fundraising project which typically helps Quaker mission work.  Set forth below are brief descriptions of the projects for 2014.  Please help as you are led and able.  Both projects are equally endorsed by First Friends’ Witness & Service committee.  Your contributions should indicate which project (or both) you wish to support.  Checks should be made out to First Friends.  Thank you for your support.  Please refer to the websites of WYM and FUM for further information about these Quaker organizations and these projects.

  • WYM 2014 Special Project. This project is titled “Movin’ on Down the Road”...in Belize.  WYM runs a Belize Friends School that helps challenged 8th grade boys pass a required test to obtain further education (the “further education” is equivalent to our high school).  Without such “further education” these boys would typically have little direction for their lives, mostly ending up in a gang and doing what is necessary to obtain money to live.  The Friends’ school in Belize assists approximately 20 students each year but would like to expand to include additional students.  The goal of this project is to raise $10,000 for the expansion of this school ministry.  You might recall that about a month ago, First Friends, Indianapolis hosted Dale Graves who asked for financial assistance for his anticipated expenses to go to Belize and be chief administrator of the school for the next year.  This WYM project complements the efforts of Dale to help the school expand to accommodate additional children.  The boys who desire to attend the Belize Friends School appreciate any help that you are able to provide.
  • FUM 2014 Summer Mission Project. This project is titled “Education for Esther.”  While visiting a Friends’ school in Turkana, Kenya, Quaker Eden Grace discovered that girls begin school in the first grade about the same rate as boys, but almost all drop out by the 8th grade.  They drop out for several reasons...1) parents can’t afford to send them, 2) they are needed to work in the home, 3) they don’t have sanitary towels so they stay home one week each month, fall behind, get discouraged and leave school, 4) they marry in their early teens and begin having babies.  Esther was the only girl in the 7th grade and it was unlikely that she would stay in school long enough to complete 8th grade let alone proceed to further education.    Eden Grace promised Esther that if she would stay in school and complete 8th grade, we would send her to high school.  FUM would like to ensure that all the girls who passed and qualified for high school would be given the necessary funds to continue their education in a Friends’ school in Turkana.  It costs $400 per year to cover fees for one student.  The promise that such fees will be available is a great incentive for these girls to stay in primary school and go on to high school.  The goal of this project is to raise $20,000.  Esther and many other girls in Turkana appreciate the help you are able to provide.

Friend to Friend July 23rd

Concerns, Announcements and Devotional Thought

A Weekly Ministry of Indianapolis First Friends Meeting

As Way Opens   by Ruthie Tippin

This past week was filled with four days spent together with our larger family of Friends in Plainfield, IN for the annual sessions of Western Yearly Meeting.  Never let it be said that our Yearly Meeting does not pay attention to current concerns in our Meetings, or in the larger concerns facing the church in the world.  There it was, on the agenda for Friday, July 18th: ‘Prayerful consideration of the Court Decision on Indiana law regarding marriage”.  At the close of four active sessions of business, YM Clerk Dale Graves called our attention to this concern, saying that many Friends had asked both Dale and Wanda Coffin Baker, WYM Supt., what Western Yearly Meeting’s response was.  Their answer was to ask the YM – to begin the conversation with the YM at this session, under the care of the Spirit.

A time of reflection was offered for the recent Supreme Court rulings regarding marriage.  Under the Clerk’s direction that leadings come – not from fear or anger, but from love – three persons spoke out of the silence, drawing our attention to the description of creation and marriage found in Genesis 1 & 2, the conflict between culture and biblical faith, and the Spirit of God found in both those under the law and apart from it shown in Peter’s dream found in Acts 10.  Another person spoke of the difficulty this issue has been for our Yearly Meeting, with some persons leaving us and some being asked to leave.  The same person quoted the Apostle Paul - that ‘now we know only in part’ – that Western Yearly Meeting must be certain to learn from the past, to look toward the future, and to proceed in love.

No decisions were made.  No action was taken.  No issues were settled.  They did not need to be that day.  The Spirit of God was evident, in the generosity of listening, the openness to speak, and the very fact that our Yearly Meeting realized the need to be responsive to concerns that all Christians, all faith communities, all persons face.  Quakers live real lives in real life context.  We do not live in silent communities, separated from the world.  We are a part of God’s great unfolding, living, creative, vital Breath.  Let us all breathe deeply, listen generously, and act and speak always in love.  The conversation has only just begun.

“Understand this, my beloved brethren.  Let everyone be quick to hear - a ready listener, slow to speak, slow to take offense and to get angry.  For one’s anger does not promote the righteousness God wishes and requires.”  James 1:19-20 Amplified

Concerns, Announcements and Devotional Thought

A Weekly Ministry of Indianapolis First Friends Meeting

As Way Opens

‘The first gleam of light, “the first cold light of morning,” which gave promise of day with its noontide glories, dawned on me one day at Meeting, when I had been meditating on my state in great sadness. I seemed to hear the words articulated in my spirit, “Live up to the light that thou hast; and more shall be granted thee.”

                                                               Caroline Fox 1840

So many times we think that what we have to offer is of little consequence.  What possible worth could our gifts, talents, or participation in our community, in our family, in our Meeting have?  How could our lives make a difference?  Caroline Fox discovered what each one of us should remember… that God gives each one of us light… a measure of God within.  The more we live in and experience that light, the more light we gain.  And the more we share that light with others, the more light we discover we are a part of.  Rather than denying the light we have, God asks us to fully claim it, live in it, and use it.  God is light! Live in the light of God’s love and presence.  Discover the light that is the life of all people!  John 1:4

Concerns, Announcements and Devotional Thought

A Weekly Ministry of Indianapolis First Friends Meeting

As Way Opens

I was reflecting on Ruthie's message Sunday afternoon and reading a wonderful book, The Meaning of Mary Magdalene by Cynthia Bourgeault.  The chapter I read examined the Song of Songs and its wisdom meaning of love.  The author quoted St. Bernard of Clairvaux, the great reforming monk that started a monastic community at Clairvaux in France in the early twelfth century.  St Bernard had great influence throughout Europe and the Holy Land and was a persuasive preacher as well as a mystic devoted to the contemplation of the humanity of Christ and the power above the pope.Bernard wrote extensively on the Song of Songs (a gripping tale of love) and his words affirmed the message that Ruthie shared on love this past Sunday.

"If anyone desires to grasp these writings, let him love!  For anyone who does not love, it is vain to listen to this song of Love - or to read it, for a cold heart cannot catch fire from its eloquence.  The one who does not know Greek cannot understand Greek, nor can one ignorant of Latin understand one speaking Latin. So too, the language of love will be a meaningless jangle, like sounding brass or tinkling cymbal, to anyone who does not love."

Jesus so clearly articulated the foundation of our lives - love!  As the famous love chapter outlines in I Corinthians 13: 1-3, "If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing."  The concept is so simple and yet it is the challenge of our existence - to live in Love.

A Weekly Ministry of Indianapolis First Friends Meeting

As Way Opens  by Beth Henricks

As many of you know, we are renovating our basement as part of our Quaker Affirmation project.  Leslie Kartholl and Amanda Cordray are taking the lead on this project and the planning and selection of colors, carpet squares, furniture and furnishings is underway. We are very excited to take this beautiful space that has been underutilized and turn it into a place for our young people (and others).  If you have never been down to the basement, I encourage you to walk down there so you can see a "before renovation" view of this interesting room.

When you go down there, please look outside and see an amazing mosaic of Jesus on the retaining wall.  Our own Dan Mitchell led a group of our highschool students in the late 1990's in creating this mosaic in the image of Georges Rouault’s painting of Jesus. The kids took pictures of our members and attenders from the directory and cut them and placed them on the wall to create this image.  What a beautiful concept that we are in and of Christ.  Dan shared with me last week that during the completion of this art project, our beloved Sid Crane (long time member and husband of Ann Kendall who passed away several years ago) who lived nearby at the Brockton Apartments, walked over to the Meeting every day and circled the building praying for these young people and this project.  Sid's faith and his deep compassion and care for others was so evident in his life.  And what a beautiful testimony to be praying for our young people and for a lasting legacy that remains on our wall and continues to deeply touch our Spirit.

Concerns, Announcements and Devotional Thought

A Weekly Ministry of Indianapolis First Friends Meeting

As Way Opens

Have you ever left Meeting for Worship, turned your car around, and returned to attend Monthly Meeting for Worship to Conduct Business?  Someone did this past Sunday… and she was a visitor who had never come to First Friends before.  Because of a warm invitation given in worship, and at God’s leading… well, I’ll let her tell you the story:  “I'm so glad that God nudged me to turn around and come back; that's the first business meeting at a church I've ever attended, but I loved being able to witness how the process works and being able to meet more people.”

Unlike many faith communities, Quakers make decisions as one body… there is no appointed board or commission that decides things for the Meeting.  We make choices for ourselves by consensus, based on committee recommendations and leadings that arise out of the gathered meeting.  Wonderful things happen under the guidance of the Spirit in Monthly Meeting.  This Sunday, a family was approved for membership.  Plans were announced to prepare to celebrate our 160th Anniversary as a Meeting in 2015.  Nominating Committee brought a docket full of names, approved by all for ministry and service to the Meeting. Giving has increased this past month, for which we give God great thanks.  Vacation Bible School is being readied, and we look forward to ministry with many families beyond our own.  We laughed, we prayed, we made decisions, we enjoyed being intentional.  And we all participated… even if we’d just turned our car around to come.  Each person matters.  Each person, whether an observer or a participant, matters.  When is the last time you worshipped at Monthly Meeting?

‘Are your meetings for church affairs held in loving dependence upon the Spirit of God, and are they vigilant in the discharge of their duties?  Do you individually take your right share in the attendance and service of these meetings so that the burden [and joy!] may not rest upon a few?’

Friend to Friend June 18th

As Way Opens   by Beth Henricks

Friends United Meeting(FUM) - what is this organization that just held their Triennial Meeting at Indiana Wesleyan College, where Ruthie and I attended last week?  It is an international association of Quakers primarily made up of 34 Yearly Meetings (our own Western Yearly Meeting is affiliated with FUM).  Its goal is to work together in evangelism, global partnership, leadership development and communications.  FUM was formed as an association called Five Years Meeting in 1902 that organized the more orthodox Quaker Yearly Meetings within the United States.   As we all know, there is a great diversity of theology among our body of Quakers and FUM is an association that includes both pastoral and unprogrammed meetings that are Christ centered.   FUM historically was the organization that sponsored new church plantings in East Africa which is now home to far more Quakers than meet in the United States.  FUM sponsors schools in Belize and Ramallah sponsors work teams to Cuba, and supports a number of projects like scholarships for Kenyan youth (Education for Esther Summer Project). It publishes the magazine Quaker Life.  Please visit their website to learn more about this Richmond, Indiana headquartered organization (www.fum.org).

The featured speaker at this year's Triennial meeting was the well-known Quaker author Richard Foster. Ruthie had been asked to join him on stage with Colin Saxton, the head of FUM for a discussion after his message.  Ruthie, Colin and Richard had met for lunch that day and had a lively discussion about a number of topics.  That evening, after some back and forth with questions from Ruthie and Colin to Richard answering and giving his perspective, Richard turned to Ruthie and said, "You have a great spirit - how about you teach us now" and turned his chair towards her.  This was totally unplanned and unexpected, and here were 250 people waiting to hear what Ruthie would say.  It was an amazing experience to watch how Ruthie allowed God to speak through her and asked us to enter into silence, and then gave a prayer that was inspiring. Ruthie's prayer was healing, inclusive and encompassed all the aspects of how we individually may see Christ.  I just wish all of you had been there to experience this incredible moment of Christ's Presence in that room.  This was a reminder to me to take an uncomfortable situation and not think about my own words, but to turn to God to allow God's Presence to take over.

Friend to Friend for May 21

As Way Opens   by Beth Henricks

Last week was the 197th anniversary of the first private mental hospital opened in the United States called the Asylum for the Relief of Persons Deprived of the Use of Their Reason. This is monumental because it was founded by Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of Friends on a 52 acre farm that is still around today called Friends Hospital. These Quakers wanted a new model of care because at the time, mental illness was widely misunderstood and treated as criminal behavior. Mentally ill people were tied up, put in chains, isolated or beaten. The mission statement of this new type of hospital was as follows:

"To provide for the suitable accommodation of persons who are or may be deprived of the use of their reason, and the maintenance of an asylum for their reception, which is intended to furnish, besides requisite medical aid, such tender, sympathetic attention as may soothe their agitated minds and under the Divine Blessing, facilitate their recovery."

There have been many times in our collective history that Quakers have stood up for people that our society has determined are less than a Divine Blessing. It is that beautiful realization that there is that of God in each of us that requires us to take on the plight of those less fortunate. The question is - what are we doing today to help change our world? What can our collective Meeting, our Yearly Meeting, Friends United Meeting and our other national Quaker organizations do to take on discrimination and injustice?

Announcements, Reports, & Opportunities
The Big Oval! Meeting for Worship will gather in Fellowship Hall this Sunday, as we join with our

Indy 500 community, and consider the path our lives take. Join us at 10:15!

The Coffee Circle/Wired Word and the Quakerism class will each continue to meet through the summer at 9:00 a.m. All friends are welcome, including members of other classes not meeting during the summer. Childcare will be available; the children will meet in the Nursery.

The sign-up sheet for special Summer Music is now on the bulletin board in the hallway. Please sign-up to share your music with us.

Mark your calendars!!! The Annual Picnic will be on June 1st! We’ll have lunch followed by a family-friendly kickball game! It will be a potluck, so

families with last names A-K please bring desserts, L-Z please bring salads to share, or you can bring both if you’d like! The Meeting will provide chicken,

hotdogs, vegetarian hotdogs, ice cream and drinks. Please plan to come for food, fellowship, and fun!

Finance Committee Report 4/30/2014 For the 4 months ending April 30, 2014, EXPENSES exceeded income by $2,907. Our budget for the entire year has a DEFICIT of projected income compared to projected expenses, as we expand our programs & services. To make it easier to ensure your contributions continue even during inclement weather or summer vacations, you may request automatic transfers from your bank to be sent to First Friends. This can be via a paper check or an electronic transfer. Thanks for your financial support!

Did you know that your bank probably provides you with free online bill pay? If you've never used it before, it's a great way to simplify your personal finances, cut down on check writing and mailing, and track your expenses more easily. We're not talking about institutions pulling cash from your checking account--or using a credit card--rather, we're talking about logging in to your checking account and setting up payees for automatic payments. If you have used it before, you know how great it can be! Either way, Finance Committee would like to remind you that this is a great way to make your regular contributions to First Friends. The benefits are clear: the Office receives the check sent by your bank whether you happen to be in the pew on Sunday or not (of course, we want to see you there -- but it's one less thing to worry about as you're getting ready on Sunday morning!). This ensures that contributions to the meeting are less dependent on changes in the weather, vacation schedules etc., and it can greatly simplify your own giving experience! Please contact the Office if you would like more information.

The Quaker Haven camp registration deadline is May 23rd - if you are interested in having your children/young people attend Quaker Haven, the Meeting will provide for 50% of the cost if you register by May 23rd. Please send in your application to Quaker Haven with the required deposit and let the office know that your young person will attend.

Have you put anything in the Donation Station lately? The following items are collected:

  •   Food/Household items are taken to the Mid-North Food Pantry

The Garden committee needs donations and volunteers to help with the purchase and installation of an 1100 gallon cistern which will give the garden a consistent water supply. The cistern includes guttering, piping to direct water from the garage roof, and pre-filtration hardware to keep the water free of algae and debris (similar to the one pictured at the right). Tentative plans require the building of a platform so the cistern can be elevated and supported. The projected cost is $2300. With money the committee has already raised, including a $350 grant from Quaker Environmental Witness, and money from the trustees, they only need $500 more to make this happen. If you wish to donate, checks can be written to First Friends Meeting with

Garden” in the memo line. Please contact John Noble if you can assist in the build.

The Garden is a thriving work-in-progress. The raised bed gardens are producing and the cooperative garden to the east of them has space for more community

gardeners to use. Please check with current gardeners before planting in the cooperative space. The committee is attempting to organize times when gardeners can work together. Please send your suggestions to Susan Belton at sjbelton@yahoo.com.
